Why does it deserve our mention?

This farm in Jaén, run by the Vaño family, has 1500 hectacres of olive trees. Their relationship with olive growing goes back to 1780, the year of the first documents proving the family’s ownership of olive groves in the area. The Castillo de Canena, the family home in the town of 2300 inhabitants, was built before 1538 and was declared a National Monument by Spain in 1931. The entire farm uses integrated production, which is a method similar to organic farming, and the grove is harvested from the beginning of November to the end of February. Everything is picked by hand and in less than three hours is taken to the mill to be cold-pressed. Andalusia alone exported more than 8000,000 tons of high-quality olive oil in 2011, making up 60% of the amount produced in Spain (and more than that produced in Italy, Greece and Portugal together that same year.) Without a doubt, one of the best in the world.
